CHAPTER SIX

THERE were something like thirty-two days a year when a woman could get pregnant, and Poppy was pretty sure it hadn’t been yesterday—but they would have to be more careful. Next time. She was crazy. There was absolutely no sense at all in getting involved with Jake Sheppard. The trouble was, when he was there she just didn’t care.

Her skin tingled at the thought. They might have differences in opinion, but the chemistry between their bodies couldn’t be denied. Jake made her feel the most desirable, sexy, feminine woman on the planet—and he only had to look at her. When he worshipped her with his hands and mouth, he made her want to share parts of herself that no one had ever known, made her confident that whatever she did for him would be wonderful.

Poppy could feel the last shreds of inadequacy left from her marriage to Tyson dimming into obscurity. The marriage had lasted for three years. She’d never thought she’d be glad she hadn’t fallen pregnant. In fact, she remembered days when she would have given anything to have had Tyson’s baby.

She winced. Imagine being tied to a man who made you feel less of a woman. Even when married to him, sleeping with Tyson had made her feel as if there had been rules to be obeyed. Yet with Jake she felt like a deliciously wanton princess. But she wasn’t getting tied to him either.

Then the phone rang.

Poppy dropped the phone into its cradle a few minutes later with a feeling of distaste. Damn. Tyson was back in town. She felt like having another shower. Sandy had never liked her ex-husband and been apologetic on the phone, not wanting to spoil Poppy’s day off. But it would be just like the snake to sleaze up for a free meal if he caught her off guard.

The doorbell rang and Poppy glared at it. That had been fast. Short shrift is what you’re getting, boyo, she vowed as she marched to the front door and threw it open.

‘Yes?’

The quick-fire question wasn’t the greeting Jake had expected, judging by the way he stiffened. Poppy felt like a fool.

‘I’m sorry, Jake. I thought you were someone else.’

‘This is a quick visit but if it’s not a good time...?’ He shrugged and turned to leave but she rested her hand on his arm to stop him.

‘Please, stay. I’ll make a coffee.’ She smiled. ‘And I promise, no Pan flutes this early in the morning.’

‘So you noticed? No coffee thanks, Poppy.’ If she hadn’t known better she’d have said he was nervous. ‘Will you have dinner with me on Wednesday night? I’m on call the next two nights.’

She frowned at the strange expression on his face but answered easily enough. ‘I’d like that. What time and where were you planning?’

‘Seven, and I thought we’d try out of town—the Beach Hut, beside the surf club. Maybe go for a walk after the meal. On the beach?’

‘That sounds wonderful, Jake.’ He still looked strange. ‘Thank you.
